This was a bit better, angst-with-aftercare type beat.

However, I still feel like I've been just picking romance after romance where I'm supposed to already want the characters to be together even before I truly know them. This book was recommended as a slow-burn and I understand exactly why it's seen as that. In fact, I kind of agree. It's just not a tenseful slow-burn. It's one of those burns so slow you don't even know it's burning.

At the same time, the feelings are already established almost in the very beginning. I think I was kept reading by the angst, which, though not as heart-wrenching as I'd hoped for, was still quite effective. The book made me tear up, really. By then, I realized I was reading a more plot-driven book, which was an experience! I did like this book, I'm not going to try and give rational reasons for why I didn't like this book, because that would be untrue.

But... I did expect something that tugged a little better at my heartstrings. It got one actual moment of me tearing up out of me. I expected a little bit more, and a romance that was a little bit more enticing - it felt like a lot of the emotional build-up happened off-page... Especially considering how much this book loves to jump forward in time.

Still! I will try at least one other book by the author.
