Sublime

by Christina Lauren

True love may mean certain death in a ghostly affair of risk and passion from New York Times bestselling duo Christina Lauren, authors of Beautiful Bastard. Tahereh Mafi, New York Times bestselling author of Shatter Me calls Sublime "a beautiful, haunting read."

When Lucy walks out of a frozen forest, wearing only a silk dress and sandals, she isn't sure how she got there. But when she sees Colin, she knows for sure that she's here for him.

Colin has never been captivated by a girl the way he is by Lucy. With each passing day their lives intertwine, and even as Lucy begins to remember more of her life-and her death-neither of them are willing to give up what they have, no matter how impossible it is. And when Colin finds a way to physically be with Lucy, taking himself to the brink of death where his reality and Lucy's overlap, the joy of being together for those brief stolen moments drowns out everything in the outside world. But some lines weren't meant to be crossed...

Sublime is a hauntingly beautiful and captivating YA suspenseful fantasy novel that is swoon-worthy and compelling all in one sitting. The writing is lyrical and the setting and atmosphere of the book, is brilliantly developed and interesting. It sets the tone for the story that is to follow. Christina Lauren, really did a fantastic job penning this fantasy fueled, intense, and dangerous novel. After reading this book, I am definitely interested in reading her previous book, Beautiful Bastard. It's one that I've been curious about for quite some time and after reading Sublime, it's kind of sealed the deal for me as far as her writing goes.

While, I wished that Lucy and Colin's story would have been just a little more original than what it was, I can say that I really did end up enjoying it quite a bit. I liked the fact that Colin wasn't an arrogant jerk that most jocks usually are in YA who somewhat soften a bit later on in the story. He ended up being more on the sweeter side of things and there was absolutely no length that he wouldn't go to in order to be with Lucy. As dangerous as being that addicted to an adrenaline rush usually is, it actually ended up working really well for the two of them in this story, because their chemistry is pretty much off the charts and deeply intense. I really enjoyed falling in love with these two, it was both endearing and a little scary watching reading their story at times, but that was the beauty and brilliance in it.

As quiet and soft as Lucy appears in the book, on a much deeper level she is a lot stronger than I've seen other readers give her credit for. It's refreshing to see such a sweet and charmingly funny heroine, who has as much depth as Lucy does. She's one of those characters that you have to look below the surface to figure out who she is and it's incredibly refreshing that she's not so in your face and annoying, the way some I've read can come across. Honestly, I don't understand why people are saying that she makes Bella Swan look like a heroine, because Lucy is absolutely nothing like her. If anything, she's written in such a way that she's a little bit more real and honest, than Bella.

I could understand the argument being made for Sublime, being a story about an obsessive connection that Colin had for Lucy who isn't even an actual person, and the crazy intense lengths that he would go to in order to be with her. It's completely unhealthy and dangerous, but for some reason something about the way it's been written in such hauntingly dark and poetic way, it works for me where it usually wouldn't. It helps to make for a more suspenseful, intriguing, and intense filled story that is complex in more ways than imaginable. This book is filled with many dark and dangerous twists and turns, that you won't see what's going to happen next and you'll want to keep reading to find out.

Sublime, is a rollercoaster ride full of twists and turns, that will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat and drawn to the last page. If you're looking for a dark fantasy full of intrigue and beauty, then this wonderful world pulsing with adrenaline, danger, and romance is the one that you'll definitely want to sink into. If it hadn't been for the unhealthy relationship, then I would have gladly given it four stars.
