This book is a sequel to a previous one, but not having read the first one didn't spoil my enjoyment of this one. The story centres around an American, Amy, living in Paris, who has left her husband in the US. She's not sure if the move will be permanent, but her decision becomes more complicated when she discovers she is pregnant. She has made friends with an older English woman, Margaret, who she met in a cafe, whose daughter has been missing , presumed dead. Elizabeth allows Amy to live in her apartment, in the bedroom of the missing daughter. Amy's human turns up unexpectedly in Paris, wanting to see Amy, saying he has some news for her.
I thought that this was going to be a fairly short, predictable read, but then it took some unexpected twists and turns, with a few of the characters turning out to not be who they claimed to be. As things started to emerge and some surprises popped up, there was enough to keep me going to the end and I'm glad that I did.
The author contains a lot of details about Paris and the French lifestyle, which makes the story seem even more realistic. The characters are quite strong and some are more likeable than others, but all are well-written. This book as a good diversion for me and I am tempted to seek out the first one now to see how the characters go to the point they were at at the start of this one.
