We move from our Archduke and to a famous musician who has lost his spark. That, for me, was enough to get my attention. Jenny is sweet, and bold shying away realistically from a threat when she's caught with Haftan's instruments.

Their evolution is paced much the same as the first book's is, but the pay off here feels a little more real. Learning about Haftan, seeing Jenny become his muse and reintroduce him to his love of music softens Haftan in a more realistic way for me.

World wise - we move away from the horrors of how humans are treated in Protheka. Not entirely, but enough to allow Haftan to be seen fully as compassionate, even when he scares the shit out of people around him in his rages. While I very much enjoyed Haftan and Jenny's relationship, the erotic parts didn't stick with me.
