What an epic story!
But this book took me a while to get into. I would pick it up, read a chapter or two then put it back down.
For some reason it just didn’t capture my attention. Now I think that has to do with the fact that it was based on angels. I’m still unsure on my opinion of angel themed books because the topic is so broad. I mean vampire based books are pretty clean cut. They’re either terrifying monsters or sexy, brooding, trying-to-change-their-killing-habit ways, mysterious unknowns. Angels on the other hand seem to go in all different angles with their religion aspects.
I have read a total of three books based on angels including this one (Maybe four if you consider the blue bloods series which is based on vampires that stemmed from angels, which might just have contradicted my theory on vampires being clean cut… Fine, MOST vampire books are clean cut. From the vampire based books I have read so far… Anyway,) and out of those three books I only loved one. And that one book has turned into one of my favourite books; Unearthly by Cynthia Hand. Which, by the way, is a YA book you MUST read if you haven’t already! So my opinion is still unclear on angel based books.
This book was interesting. There was a lot of fighting, Ellie was a strong female lead (unless she was cowering in fear and her guardian Will had to protect her), a sexy love interest, a weird love triangle that kind of randomly dissipated in the middle and lots of killing. The writing didn’t cause any hiccups for me meaning I didn’t get stuck on sentences and there weren’t long winded descriptions. I just found I wasn’t interested in the book that much. I tried to so hard to enjoy it, but alas it wasn’t for me.
Ellie’s father was an interesting character. I just knew there was something going on there. I hated him but I found him interesting because I had no idea why he acted the way he did. Yet I have suspicions.
The love triangle. As I said above it just randomly stopped being a triangle in the middle of the book! It didn’t stop because Ellie made her feelings clear, it just stopped. Something happened quarter of the way through of the book then bam! It was barely mentioned again. It was weird.
I nearly didn’t finish reading this book because it wasn’t for me. I had tackled half way through when I put it down and nearly decided not to finish reading it. But then I couldn’t sleep and picked it up again. When I was three quarters of the way through I nearly did the same thing. But since I only had a quarter to go I decided to carry on. That’s when I got interested. The last couple of chapters of the book were intense. Action packed and emotionally moving.
So from a non-biased perspective this book was written well, exciting and intense. The amount of research that would have had to go in to build the world and the back stories would have been a lot. I respect Moulton for her hard work and good writing.
If you like action packed stories with fighting, killing (Reapers not humans) and a little but of romance on the side then this is definitely the book for you!
But this particular plot was not for me. I did not enjoy it as much as I would have had I had more interest in angels and reapers. Or killing for that matter.
Let me know what your opinion on it was!
