Changeless by Gail Carriger

Changeless (Parasol Protectorate, #2)

by Gail Carriger

Alexia Tarabotti, now Lady Maccon, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears - leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria. But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions and an arsenal of biting civility. Even when her investigations take her into the backwaters of ugly waistcoats, Scotland, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only A soulless can. She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.

The ending to "Changeless" has left me bereft and dying to read the next book!

In book 2 of the "Parasol Protectorate", we catch up with Lady and Lord Maccon three months into their marriage. Alexia is adjusting to life at Woolsey Castle, her new job with the Shadow Council, as well as her new husband's endless affection. In this installment, we get to follow Alexia and Conall back to the Highlands to become acquainted with the alpha's former pack. This, however, is not a social visit for Alexia, she is there to solve a mystery.

Along for the adventure are: Ivy, Angelique, Felicity, Tunstell and a new friend, Madame Lafoux, a cross-dressing inventor. There is mystery, intrigue, witty conversation and steampunk. That's right, there is a lot of talk of the machinery within this world to delight you.

I love the pacing of these books. They go along with a story that is developing at a great pace. I love the characters. I swear, Alexia and I would be friends if she was real. The witty dialog always makes me giggle and the interactions between the Lord and Lady, swoon. Theirs is an unlikely, but smile inducing, love story. They are romantic without being sappy.

Now about that ending? UGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Gail Carriger, you must fix this mess.
