Love is a gamble.

I’m not a gambler. Never have and never will be. It’s just not a vice that I find appealing. I like my money in my pocket and I’m definitely not a risk taker. In Bet Me Something I think their biggest gamble was on whether by putting themselves out there, would the payoff be worth the risk. Is it worth putting your heart on the line? How long will you let the line dangle before you realise that the fish you were hoping to catch isn’t ready to be caught until you change the bait? Bet Me Something is the story of Kenzie and Colby.

Poor Kenzie has a mother you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. She’s nasty, bossy and very self-serving. At the beginning of the story, we find out that Kenzie has just graduated from College. Kenzie’s mother throws her a graduation party, that she’s not particularly enjoying then drops a bombshell on Kenzie. She had been on a full lacrosse scholarship in LA which is on the other side of the country from her family. She picked a college so far away for two reasons. One, to get away from her mother, and two, because her childhood crush, who's also her big brother’s friend, Colby lives in LA. Now that her college is finished up, she plans to stay in LA and keep studying, while also attempting to get a foot into the music industry which is her first love. The bombshell Kenzie’s mother dropped is that she’s not going to pay for her further studies in LA and that if she wants to keep studying, she’ll have to come home to do it. Feeling all hope is lost, she intends to spend the little time left she has left in LA trying to make Colby see her as more than “practically his sister”.

Colby has a past…a very, very busy past. He has been with a lot of women and has a reputation for it. His older brother and best friend don’t seem to take him entirely seriously even though he’d started and was succeeding with a movie production company. Kenzie has always been in his life and he has always felt protective of her, but lately it’s been harder and harder to put her in the “practically his sister” box. She’s a beautiful woman who is sassy and very sarcastic. Colby knows that family and friends will think he’s not good enough for Kenzie, so he’s not willing to see her as anything more. He might not be willing…but his body is certainly able to see her as more when Kenzie comes to stay with him for a little while.

Colby and Kenzie now have to take the gamble. Are they willing to sacrifice their friendship for a tumble? Will they be able to go back to the way it was if things don’t work out? Will the potential fights with family and friends be worth it? If only they could keep their clothes on around each other….

This was an extremely sexy and steamy story. Kenzie has little to no experience, while Colby has an overabundance of experience. I think in the end they both learnt something from the other.

I liked Bet Me Something even though I thought it was way, way too long. The weird part is that I liked all of it even though it was too long. The author has a way of writing that every word seems to have a purpose, a meaning and a need to be included. Maybe, some of the dramas didn’t need to be included. Or it could have been that the couple took too long to come together. I think the part that was drawn out too long was their need to keep their relationship a secret from family and friends. That never works and of course, there was a big hullabaloo when it all came out. Besides the length, my only other complaint was that I thought that Kenzie was a little too accepting. She lets her mother rule her life, her brother tells her what to do and worst of all lets people make decisions for her. By the end of the story we finally see her stand up for herself…but it was a long time coming. I also thought that Kenzie put up with way too much from Colby. He has a bad habit of not thinking before speaking and let some doozies fly and she always forgives him. I hated that by protecting himself, by hiding their relationship, every time he introduced Kenzie as his best friend's little sister, he was hurting her.

In the end, I enjoyed Bet Me Something. I loved Kenzie's rules for dating and her beliefs that she was worth more than dinner and a tumble. I hated seeing Colby vulnerable but loved it when he finally realises that the future is way more important than the past. This was the first story I’ve read by this author and I don’t think it will be the last. I had no problems following along even though it’s the third book in the series. Now that I know they are long stories, I can better prepare myself for the ride.
