Becca and Alastor were married before Alastor went off to fight in the civil war. When he almost miraculously returned to her after the fighting was over, they should have finally had that happily ever after that they promised themselves before he left. But the war and the death have left their mark on Alastor and he turns to gambling, drinking and woman to forget, until that fateful night when Becca shoot and kills her beloved husband.
In Spiritus, our reincarnated Becca has returned to Corydon, Indiana after her father inherited the house that used to belong to Becca and Alastor. What she quickly learns is that Alastor’s ghost is not at rest and he has been waiting for revenge on his beloved wife. As Becca learns of her former life, Alastor learns to forgive and remembers his great love for Becca before the war changed him.
In Haunted, Alastor wants Becca to move on with living her life, and thrusts her back into the arms of her former high school friend, Jonah. But can you give your heart to one man, when your soul belongs to another?
Now in the final chapter of this story, like us, Becca is desperate for a way to return Alastor to flesh and blood, and she is going back to New Orleans to see the voodoo priestess who hinted that there was a way to obtain what her heart wants the most. But Alastor thinks the price of black magic is too high and he will do whatever he must to stop Becca – because failure could mean the end of Becca’s sanity.
THOUGHTS:
I was excited to receive a copy of this last installment of the Spiritus series. I enjoyed the story of Becca and Alastor, so much so that I was pissed off when I read the first book and didn’t realize it was a first of a series and it ended without satisfying answers. I was not as excited about the second book but mostly because it didn’t go where I wanted it to go (and where book 3 takes us) but you would need to read it to follow the storyline.
Now Incarnate takes us on a trip to New Orleans for some voodoo, and Becca’s frantic determination to play with black magic and Alastor’s frantic determination to stop her left me biting my nails to see if she could actually succeed or if in fact Alastor is right and there is no way to come back.
At only 83 pages, I breezed through this climatic ending quickly. I definitely would have liked some more pages to see what life had become “after”.
It was an enjoyable self-published release in the category of young adult and I would highly recommend giving it a try.
Received an ARC from the author. Thank you.
