So I've heard of Kwan's work of course and was browsing through for an audiobook to listen to at work right away.

I saw this one available and snatched it up quick. Now, here's my confession: I didn't realize this was a by the number series. In my defense, the library didn't have it listed as a series AT ALL. And I was in a rush because I need something to listen to at work. So I haven't read the first two books yet, but I will do so once my holds come through.

It still worked out okay, I didn't get lost or confused with all the places and players. I did wonder why they talked about Rachel being poisoned but didn't REALLY explain why Collette was the one to do it. I was still wondering and really uncomfortable with the glee people felt about Collette's fate because of this.

I will admit to be disappointed by Astrid in the end a little bit. I wanted her to come back being a feminist badass and start saving the world like I damn well know she can.

It didn't take long to get into. The narrator is great with all the different voices, tones, and pronunciations. It definitely kept me going. I didn't want to stop listening to it. I was somehow invested in them with all their fucking bullshit and wanted to see how it all ended.

Beware though lots of talk of food and clothes and cars and fancy shit I don't know shit about and don't fucking care to learn. If you don't want to know how it ends, it's enough to bore you out of the book, TBH.

Every time I was fed up with their rich bullshit talking about billions like nothing and them not doing a damn thing for anyone else, something broke the tension, made me laugh, and allowed me to continue.

But I am still seriously pissed at all the injustice and imbalance with this bullshit and kept thinking, "I can't wait to eat the fucking rich" while reading. Same reason I don't bother with a lot of romance books and shit. But I'm willing to go on reading the series. I will admit if it was a bunch of white people, I'd have fucking quit quick. Setting it in Asia and Britain and Paris etc, keeps it one step removed. If it was like Bill Gates or some shit, I'd be up in arms.

Notes while reading:
~TW suicide & bipolar character. I personally think it was handled well, honest to the reality of it. I've spiraled like that before. People don't get the downside of mania and fall in love with romanticized bullshit.
~SO much Christian bullshit. I wasn't expecting it and honestly hated it like I always do. More tolerable because again they aren't white.
~Pushy AF parents wanting grand kids. Ugh.
~Hilarious shit, including but not limited to: the whole "robbing banks" conversation, "watched the nanny change your diapers", and "Ed Sharan wrap".
~Wasn't as surprised at the will because all the not so subtle hints. Was surprised at the epilogue.
~
