Lubna and Pebble by Wendy Meddour

Lubna and Pebble

by Wendy Meddour

In an unforgettable story that subtly addresses the refugee crisis, a young girl must decide if friendship means giving up the one item that brings her comfort during a time of utter uncertainty.

Lubna's best friend is a pebble. Pebble always listens to her stories. Pebble always smiles when she feels scared. But when a lost little boy arrives in the World of Tents, Lubna realizes that he needs Pebble even more than she does.

This emotionally stirring and stunningly illustrated picture book explores one girl's powerful act of friendship in the midst of an unknown situation.

- this book does a great job of doing a lot with minimal text and showing rather than telling. It doesn't directly say where the characters are from, but looking at their names we can understand the three characters here are from an Arabic-speaking country.

This is one of the shorter picture books I've read, but it says more with its three words than others do with twenty. This also isn't just a heartwarming story about a girl, her friends, and her family, but this book also addresses the immigration crisis in a very personal way without ever mentioning anything other than the word "tents". Even the pictures are vague at best, which works in the story's favor here. Even with all that, it's clear where you are and what's going on.

I think the only thing I can say here that I didn't like was the art style -- which is completely subjective anyway. There's really not much I can complain about. And all together, the whole thing just really works.
