A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1)

by V.E. Schwab

Most people only know one London; but what if there were several? Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare ability to travel between parallel Londons. I had very high expectations going into this book. Everywhere on booktube, I saw people just loving all of VE Schwab's books, and especially this series is very loved.
The concept was new and interesting, and I liked how different the four Londons are. They all have their own personality and are just unique enough. Some of the plot twists in this book were pretty obvious, however, there were a lot of things I hadn't expected and I was blown away by how much I already cared about these characters and situations. VE Schwab has a wonderful writing style, making it an easy yet very intriguing read. I am glad VE Schwab was not afraid to kill off characters, as I am used to in the YA novels I read, and just went for it. It made the story feel so much more alive.

It felt as if this book was over way too quickly as if I hadn't spent enough time yet in the world and with the characters. The story would have been too long if it had been dragged out, but I did not want to leave this world. I wanted to read more about Lila, Kell, everyone. I loved Kell, he reminded me of Newt Scamander, in a very good way. I cannot wait till the next book.
