I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I loved how a lot of the things you wondered about through the other books in the series finally was explained in this one. Like the evil cheese in the Agency's fridge. Why Rosa hates Marissa. Why magic goes so horribly, weirdly wrong around Marissa. (And I totally didn't see the answer to that coming!)
I really liked Mikey, his character really grew in this book. Grimm is still my favorite, as he has been in all the books. But I also loved reading about the Adversary (the devil), and we get to meet god as well (though I've already forgotten her title... The Arbitrator maybe? Something that started with A..)
Death has a lot of book time in this one, and I liked learning more about Ari. Still don't much like Wyatt though. The major down bits for me was that there was a lot of slow spots in the middle of the book for me. Extra details and events that I'm not sure if they actually mattered or not. The beginning and the end of the book were good, I loved the ending especially! But there was some slogging to get there. Book 2 was by far my favorite in this series.
By the time Marissa was ready to deal with the Black Queen, I'd already lost interest. Mostly in the Black Queen. I wanted to know how she would finally die or be defeated, but I didn't really care about her anymore as a character. I liked how Marissa handled it, but it was more of a feeling of "oh goody, that's done with" than happiness that she'd finally done what she had been needing to do for the whole book.
If you've read book 2, you need to read this one if for no other reason than to see the big reveal near the end. This review was originally posted on Fantasy of the Silver Dragon
