Starting off where the first book left off, Alex is back in school, doing extra training sessions with Seth and Aiden while dealing with the loss of her mother from the first book. There is so much that Alex goes through in this book, and not just the remnants of what happened before. There is more loss, death and heartbreak and it’s a wonder how she makes it through it all.

Alex is still stubborn, has anger issues and gets into fights and does stupid things, but she really does start to learn and change in this book. She learns more about herself, a little bit more control and when to admit and learn from her mistakes. She still has the romance issue, where Aiden is forbidden and he won’t be with her, and Seth who she fights with constantly but somehow finds comfort in him at the important times. I’m honestly rooting for Seth, I mean come on, he’s the Apollyon!

A good part of this book is spent at the New York Covenant, building up to Alex’s hearing in front of the all powerful Council. They want her testimony from the events of Gatlinburg from the last book, and everyone is worried that her sharp tongue and violent actions could get her in way more trouble then she would at home. The hearing was of course awesome, although Telly is a big douche.

Now the furies, they show up as statues at the different Covenants near the beginning of the book, pretty much as insurance from the Gods in case anything happens. They don’t actually awaken until near the end of the book. I wanted to mention them because they are awesome in a dark way, they inspire fear in everyone just by being solid, and they’re crazy when they finally do get released and start attacking everyone the fight that happens is great. The ending definitely has a sad moment, and leaves us on a cliffhanger, asking what’s going to happen next.

One of my favourite scenes is actually when Alex has some brew (you will find out when you read it), the way she acts is just so hilarious and unlike her and I couldn’t stop laughing! I felt bad for Seth having to babysit her, I know when I get giggling fits my fiance just looks at me weirdly and tries to stay away until I stop.

This book was just as good as the first, and definitely a must read series!
