Tunnel of Bones (City of Ghosts, #2)

by Victoria Schwab

The thrilling sequel to Victoria Schwab's New York Times
bestselling City of Ghosts!
Trouble is haunting Cassidy Blake . . . even more than usual.

She (plus her ghost best friend, Jacob, of course) are in Paris,
where Cass's parents are filming their TV show about the world's
most haunted cities. Sure, it's fun eating croissants and seeing
the Eiffel Tower, but there's true ghostly danger lurking beneath
Paris, in the creepy underground Catacombs.

When Cass accidentally awakens a frighteningly strong spirit,
she must rely on her still-growing skills as a ghosthunter -- and
turn to friends both old and new to help her unravel a mystery.

But time is running out, and the spirit is only growing stronger.

And if Cass fails, the force she's unleashed could haunt
the city forever.

New York Times bestselling author Victoria Schwab
returns to the spooky and heart-pounding world of City
of Ghosts, delivering thrilling new adventures and an unforgettable
spin on friendship. (Because sometimes, even psychic ghost
best friends have secrets...)

Book Summary:

Cassidy Blake is the daughter of two ghost hunters. They film ghost shows, but how much they believe is debatable. For example, they’ve never believed the stories Cassidy has tried to tell them.

You see, Cass can really see ghosts, thanks to a near-death experience. Now, Cass uses her ability to help ghosts pass over to the other side, whether or not they’re willing to go. Some ghosts are just too dangerous to stay on this side of the veil, as Cass has learned the hard way.

My Review:

Cassidy Blake has a talent for getting into trouble, I'll say that much. Tunnel of Bones is the second novel in the Cassidy Blake series, yet I know I'm taking forever to get through this series. Don't judge me.

I don't feel I enjoyed the second novel as much as the first. Maybe it was a sophomore slump, or maybe I wasn't in the right mindset when I read it. Other readers and reviewers seemed to enjoy it okay, so it might be a me thing.

Here's what I liked: the setting, for starters. The French Catacombs are terrifying enough without adding a guaranteed interaction with ghosts. That's a "no thank you" for me. So, it's a pretty perfect setting for a ghost story. I also am relieved to see Jacob's story progress, if only a bit. There's obviously a lot more to his backstory/unlife, but I have to assume that'll all come out in the final book.

As for what I didn't enjoy as much, I have to say it - the secondary characters. Most didn't feel all that realistic because of their reactions (or lack thereof), while others felt hollow. Ironic, I know. Another problem I had, and this is totally a "me problem," is that I spent more of this novel worrying about the cat than I would like to admit.

Overall, Tunnel of Bones is a solid addition to the series. It's not my favorite, but I loved the setting and the aesthetics, and sometimes, that's enough.
