This is a great story, told in the voices of the two title characters, Nora and Kettle. It is set in New York about 8 years after WWII. Nora is a girl from a rich family. Her father is a famous civil rights lawyer, but life at home is pretty bleak and dangerous for her. Kettle is a Japanese American orphan, living on the streets to survive. As the story progresses, it reaches the point where their individual lives collide and life will never be the same for either of them.

It's a well written story with believable characters. At times it is harrowing to read, but there are also moments of hope and joy. There is a sequel, which I intend to read at some point.
