by Imo Oono

“Smile” is a popular streamer who’s self-conscious about her looks. “Cherry” is a shy boy with a love of haiku. When these two strangers accidentally bump into each other at the local mall, it’s the start of a new relationship weaved by their modern and classical expressions of their feelings. Based on the gorgeous animated film!

Summary:

They say opposites attract. But is that true? Cherry is shy, preferring to spend his time writing haikus, wearing headphones, and generally doing his best to avoid people. Meanwhile, Smile is a streamer - famous for hiding her face behind a mask.

Naturally, these two opposites are about to collide, embroiled in a secret they’ll want to keep from the world. In doing so, they’ll get to know one another, finding a connection they’ve always craved.

Review:

I didn’t realize this until after reading it, but is Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop, Vol. 1 actually based on anime? You don’t normally see the adaptation going that way, so I found that to be a bit funny (side note: I wonder how the anime is?).

Obviously, I can’t compare the two since I haven’t watched the anime. But I can say that I found this to be a bit on the dry side and did not become at all invested in the story or the characters (sorry to put it so bluntly).

That said, there are some cute elements. If you’re looking for a light rom-com, this one might be worth checking out!

Highlights:
Anime Adaptation
Cute storytelling
Teenage life

Will I continue the series? Don’t think so
