Olena is a young girl in an Academy where the students are waiting for the day they will turn. She is part of a group of hunters that track and kill the wolves on the Isle. When Olena learns that her mother is in a coma because of dark magic, she realizes she has to do whatever it takes to help her mother wake up. She needs to understand why her mom did the things she did before coming to her current situation. As she goes through her journey, Olena comes to understand that what she has been taught about the history of the Isle may not be the complete truth.

I thought this was a great YA story, with new and unique story elements! For the most part, the world building was great. There were a few areas that I would have loved to have more information. It took me a while to understand that they were at an academy. It also would of been helpful to have more information about the Cursed Mothers, the history of the wolves and witches, the stones, the witches sacred labs and Gods, and the offerings that were made each year. I do wonder if there will be more information in the next book. I thought the pace of the book was good and kept me wanting to read more. At first, I wasn't so sure about the Ukrainian words because I had to keep referring back to the glossary, but once I learned what each word meant, I really started enjoying it. It added a uniqueness and made the story feel like it had history and culture. I was not expecting the plot twist at the end, so I am very excited for the next book!

Overall I really liked this book and thought the storyline was pretty great! The unexpected twists and turns really kept me on my toes and wanting to read more. I will be eagerly awaiting the next story in the series!
