My Hero Academia, Vol. 31 (My Hero Academia)

by Kohei Horikoshi

Midoriya inherits the superpower of the world’s greatest hero, but greatness won’t come easy.

What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called “Quirks”? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? The Hero Academy of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?

In the aftermath of the battle in Jaku City, the forces of good are reeling. With so many heroes dead, it seems like society itself is on the verge of collapse. Although Midoriya and the others have managed to drive off Tomura, All For One is only just getting started. As the dust settles, the Todoroki family must finally face their troubled past, and Midoriya begins to understand what One For All really is and that reaching his full potential might test his convictions…

Summary:

In the world of My Hero Academia, approximately eighty percent of the population (and growing) have been born with quirks – unique superpowers. Midoriya is part of the twenty percent group – born without a quirk. He never let that destroy his dreams of becoming a hero, and look at him now!

It's the fight we've all been waiting for. Or one of them, at any rate. The heroes and the villains are about to battle it out, and the risk couldn't be higher. Worse, Shigaraki is awake and throwing around new powers.

Review:

Whew. This arc hits HARD. That is especially true for the wrap-up volume, My Hero Academia Vol. 31. Horikoshi isn't pulling punches. To be fair, we're talking about an all-out battle between heroes and villains, so I wouldn't expect anything less.

While this volume hurts (confirmed character death list and all that), I really do adore it. There's so much going on, including politics, backstory revelations, and even more details about One For All. So it's perfect for the fans.

There's a lot I want to say about My Hero Academia Vol. 31, but I know it'll stray into spoilers if I do that. Let's just say that there are so many wonderful but heartbreaking moments here, and it is absolutely worth the read.

Highlights:
Teenage Superheroes
Shonen
Expansive Cast
