Captain Marvel by Alyssa Wong Vol. 1: The Omen (CAPTAIN MARVEL, #1)

Highest, furthest, fastest! Captain Marvel has a new look, a new creative team and a new status quo! When cat burglar Yuna Yang set out to steal the legendary Nega-Bands, she was looking for a quick paycheck. What she got was a free ticket to the Negative Zone - and permanent entanglement with Carol Danvers! Permanent until death, that is. And it doesn't look like Yuna's going to make it to old age - not with the Omen hot on her tail and hungry for the bands' power! Meanwhile, Carol's got to get these blasted bangles off and reclaim her life - and who better to ask for advice than the Sorcerer Supreme Clea Strange? Because the more Carol keeps getting bounced into the Negative Zone, the more likely it is she'll have to face Blastaar the Living Bomb-Burst! Collecting CAPTAIN MARVEL (2023) #1-4.

Summary:

A new costume means new adventures! At least it does in the superhero world. While Captain Marvel is debuting her new costume, another character is entering the scene. Yuna Yang is a cat burglar, and you've probably never heard of her because she's actually pretty good at not getting caught.

Until now, that is. The temptation of the Nega-Bands was too much, and it was not just Yuna who was interested. Now, Yuna and Carol are linked, forcing them to work together to find a new way out of it. But sometimes strange circumstances are the best way to make friends, right?

Review:

I'll be honest with you: Captain Marvel Vol. 1: The Omen wasn't what I expected. Though I don't entirely know what I was expecting (maybe more politics? The whole gala vibe is probably the reason for that).

There are things I did and didn't love about this volume. So, let's dig into that. The good: I love Yuna. She may have only been around for one volume so far, but I hope she sticks. Her character is fun and different (despite the cat burglar thing being done before). Also, she's a good foil for Carol. Likewise, I loved the new costume, the colors, and the cameos. Those were all great. It made it feel new and different – while still giving us a character we know and love.

The not-so-great: I feel like they really glossed over the whole Nega-Bands bit, primarily about how they came into play. I hate it when arcs gloss over significant moments like that (even if it probably isn't a permanent thing). It makes the cost feel shallow, which lowers the risk for everything else.

Overall, Captain Marvel Vol. 1is worth reading, especially if you want to stay up to date in Captain Marvel lore. Only time will tell where this new creative team takes us!
