Summary:

The year is 1908, in Manchuria. It has not been a quiet year, as several bodies have turned up here and there. Most recently, a woman was found frozen outside of a restaurant. This gets a compassionate investigator to follow the trail and discover her identity so she may be laid to rest. What he finds is a deeper mystery than anticipated.

Meanwhile, a young woman named Snow is determined to track down a well-known photographer. She and he have unfinished business, though it will take careful planning to finally obtain what she wants.

Review:

The Fox Wife is a fascinating and lyrical adventure, perfect for historical fantasy fans. I loved Snow's story, and adding mystery elements (thanks to Bao's perspective) helped turn this story into something wholly new and different.

The way this story unfolds is masterfully done. It's impossible to predict what will happen next. Though hints do drop here and there, teasing the connections between our many characters. It was more than enough to keep this reader invested.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I adore The Fox Wife as a standalone. On the other, I would love to revisit this world and see how Snow (and the rest of the characters) are doing. I know the latter isn't likely, so I will happily take what I can get. Either way, this is my first time reading Yangsze Choo, and I am hooked!
