Book Summary:

It's Christmas Eve, 1959, and one small Australian town is about to be rocked by pain and loss. An entire family is gone in an instant, and there's no clear answer as to what happened. It will soon become a lingering unsolved murder case.

In 2018, Jess was a struggling journalist. She's been trying to make a living in London, but family events will force her home. While home, she will learn of this dark past – and how it's connected to her.

My Review:

Oh wow! Homecoming is the first novel I've read by Kate Morton (though I've had The Clockmaker's Daughter on my TBR list for ages), and I am in love! Her writing style is phenomenal – I can't see why people gush about her work now.

Homecoming is a complex mystery and historical fiction novel. It's set in two timelines (1959 and 2018) and has two perspectives. It has an additional outlet, as there's a book-within-a-book element. It's a lot but in a good way.

The truth of the past can haunt our future, a point made very clear in Homecoming. Everything else about this tale is...less clear. There are layers to the mystery, and it seems to only get more complex the more we read into it, as opposed to the opposite.

I enjoyed this journey. I thought I had a feel for what would come around the halfway mark, and it turned out I was only partially right. Once again, as more details came to light, I realized that this wouldn't be a simple "X did it" sort of situation. In other words, it is really worth the read! I'm so glad I checked it out.
