Witch Hat Atelier 5 by Kamome Shirahama

Witch Hat Atelier 5 (Witch Hat Atelier, #5)

by Kamome Shirahama

A beautifully-illustrated story about a girl who longs for magic in her life and learns that, on the inside, she already is what she wishes she could be. Reminiscent of Studio Ghibli, this lushly-drawn story was voted one of the top 10 manga of the year in 2018 by the Japanese manga industry.

BELLY OF THE BEAST

Peril abounds as the witches of Qifrey's atelier continue their trials!

In the depths of the Serpentback Cave, a brimmed cap casts its murky shadow upon Qifrey and his apprentices. The brimmed cap's dark magic has transformed Euini into a wild beast, and Coco, Tetia, and a critically injured Qifrey find themselves surrounded by the venomous stares of the cursed Romonons. In the face of doom, these witches must once again find a path to safety using their wits and their unique qualities, but will that be enough as they battle against a powerful new enemy who doesn't play by the rules?

Summary:

Coco lives in a world where magic exists. Unfortunately, she's no magician. That's the one thing she's desperately wanted to be ever since she was a little girl. However, she has also been told that magicians are born, not made. Until one day, Coco sees something that changes her life. Now she's a witch in training.

Recently, Coco and her new friends (fellow witches in training) have encountered a series of strange events. Unfortunately, these events are just as dangerous as they are strange! And it would appear that the brimmed caps are behind it all.

Review:

I swear, Witch Hat Atelier is getting better with each volume. I'm happy I can binge it, especially since it is several books deep now! I can't imagine waiting between volumes (though naturally, I will get there...).

The stakes are high in Witch Hat Atelier Vol. 5. In truth, it feels like the stakes are always high. There's always some magical threat coming for Coco and the crew. This helps keep readers (myself included) in the series. While the stakes are usually high, it is still a surprisingly casual and light read. I will credit the characters for this, as they are a delight to read about.

I enjoyed this whole subplot and am looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up. A few threads in the air will be fascinating going forward. I can't wait to dive into the next volume!
