Book Summary:

Green Lantern Sojourner "Jo" Mullein is unlike the other Lanterns. She holds a different sort of ring. Yet her mission is the same. She's been sent off to a distant planet to protect the City Enduring – complete with 20 billion people and several alien races.

Many believe that the city survives because its people don't have the ability to feel emotions. That's not simply a figure of speech – the people have been under emotional blockers for centuries. One would think that this would help prevent murders...and for the most part, they'd be right.

My Review:

Holy cats. If you had to pick only one new(ish) Green Lantern series to read, please let it be Far Sector. N.K. Jemisin, Jamal Campbell, and Deron Bennet created something truly magnificent here.

Far Sector both is and isn't a Green Lantern series. By that, I mean that it very much has the base setting and abilities – but it takes time to delve into other issues and concerns. Jo's story is compelling, but the world she's been thrust into is overwhelming and captivating in equal measure.

This series has a fantastic balance of science fiction elements (a la GL energy and aliens), political machinations, and intrigue. The plot's core may be a murder, but it doesn't take long for things to get much more complicated, and I loved every second of it.

In addition to being a fascinating story, it is also visually stunning. Jamal Campbell's artwork is striking, to put it simply. It's easy to see how this city would have looked in real life for obvious reasons. Deron Bennet's lettering helped to enhance this overall feeling.

There's something about Far Sector that will make you think. Actually, there are several somethings. Jo's backstory, the murder mystery, the political plotting, the societal undertones, the implications...I could go on and on. What I'm trying to say is – read Far Sector!
