It sounds sick and twisted but ... oh how I've missed the Mexican Cartels and the drama, adventure, and death they bring to my life! (sick and twisted, I know, moving on) I wasn't sure how much I was going to like Derek and Alana, since if you know me at all you know I have made love for Alana's brother, Javier, and he is not a major player in this adventure. BUT I am happy to say that I am glad I got to know Derek and Alana, that their story is fantastic, and I enjoyed it, even when it made me angry. There are certainly some I WANT TO STRANGLE PEOPLE moments, but not because they are too stupid to live, but more because they are incredibly brave given their circumstances.

Derek we met briefly when he did a job for Javier, and promptly stabbed him in the back. But meeting him and getting to know him is like the difference between a fast food burger and my grandfather's back yard burgers ... gimme a sec to clean up the drool ... Continuing with the food analogy, I could just eat Derek up. He is beefy, ex-military, dark, with a soft side. And he is FIERCE. I would not want to be on his bad side. Ever.

Alana is fantastic as well. She has lived through some tough stuff, but hasn't let it totally ruin her passion for life. It fuels her fire and allows her to see each moment, each encounter, as wonderful. But it also has her seeing each moment as fleeting - nothing lasts forever right?

It has been a week since I have read this book, and several books between then and now, and I still keep replaying scenes in my mind. They stick with you. And I am DYING for book three in this trilogy, Dirty Promises, because some things were set up in this that had me cackling live the evil soulless ginger I am.

And yes, this can be read as a stand alone, but for the full experience you will probably want to at least read Dirty Angles first.
