I really liked and enjoyed Jinnspeak by M.S. Farzan.

I’ve read and loved lots of indie books. Most times you can tell indies aren’t traditionally published. With Jinnspeak though, I felt like I was reading a major release like The Gauntlet.

It’s a paranormal but most of the story takes place at school, at home, and with friends. It’s a well grounded set up for a series. At only 121 pages it feels more like a prequel but maybe that’s my adult bias talking.

It was surprising she didn’t automatically understanding what the jinn said to her. I thought that’s part of the talent like most other language stories. This took me off guard and makes me wonder where it’s going. In a good way.

I love Zahra and DJ, her gay greaser gamer math nerd best friend. Her family was interesting. You can tell they love each other but they’re quiet and circumspect, torn between sheltering their daughter and keeping her happy. A totally relatable struggle.

There’s no content that would concern parents either. Of course, it’s always good to read what your child does and I think parents will like this as well. I certainly did.

I am curious about what happens next and will be looking out for the next in the series!
