The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery

The Blue Castle (Canadian Classics Library S.) (Voyageur Classics, #2) (Children's continuous)

by L. M. Montgomery

The Blue Castle (1926) is regarded by most critics and literary historians as L. M. Montgomery's best-written work, although Montgomery is still best-known for her novel Anne of Green Gables (1908). But The Blue Castle has grown greatly in popularity since being republished in 1990. The book has also often been successfully adapted for plays and musicals.

Note upon rereading: The Blue Castle is still an uplifting piece of fiction, and I found I felt closer to Valancy now I'm closer to her in age. Last time I read it, I was 19 - at 24, Valancy's frustration with the drabness of her daily life resonated with me, and I found myself cheering her on in her rebellion.
