Obsidian: Awakening by Sienna Frost

Obsidian: Awakening (Obsidian, #1)

by Sienna Frost

A war fought for peace.
A former slave who trades away his freedom.

An oracle tormented by his visions.

A wife who lives to kill her husband.

A half blood son born from hatred.

A tyrant who fights for unity.

A girl destined to end the war.

A sadistic bitch called Fate who breaks them all.

In a world where the desert splits into black and white, the outcome of a centuries-long war rests in the hands of a legendary male prostitute, a young girl born to carry the weight of nations, a wife who lives to kill her husband, and a conqueror who must become a tyrant to save an empire-all of whom must decide what they treasure more: their own freedom or that of their land.

I absolutely adored this book. What a brilliant book to start off the year.

The best part is definitely the characters. I cared about each of them fairly quickly and was really invested in their futures. I love their individual stories and their morally-greyness. These characters are all complex for different reasons. I loved figuring out their agendas and motivations.

The last 10% of this book in particular is GRIPPING. I was simultaneously rushing through it out of pure addiction, and also trying to delay the inevitable ending. I didn't want it to end! I knew the pain was coming!

This book will definitely make you take time to ponder deep thoughts. There were certain parts where I just needed to pause for a second and think about what the character was going through.

This is really character-driven grimdark at its finest. I can't wait for the rest of the series!
