How to Love a Duke in Ten Days (Devil You Know, #1)

by Kerrigan Byrne

They are a dangerous duke, a fierce lord, and an infamous earl―dark, bold, brave men who know exactly what they want. And there is only one woman who can bring them to their knees...

Famed and brilliant, Lady Alexandra Lane has always known how to look out for to herself. But nobody would ever expect that she has darkness in her past―one that she pays a blackmailer to keep buried. Now, with her family nearing bankruptcy, Alexandra strikes upon a solution: Get married to one of the empire’s most wealthy eligible bachelors. Even if he does have the reputation of a devil.

LOVE TAKES NO PRISONERS

Piers Gedrick Atherton, the Duke of Redmayne, is seeking revenge and the first step is securing a bride. Winning a lady’s hand is not so easy, however, for a man known as the Terror of Torcliff. Then, Alexandra enters his life like a bolt of lightning. When she proposes marriage, Piers knows that, like him, trouble haunts her footsteps. But her gentleness, sharp wit, independent nature, and incredible beauty awakens every fierce desire within him. He will do whatever it takes to keep her safe in his arms.

Narrated by Derek Perkins I quickly became caught up in this tale. The opening scenes introduce us to Lady Alexandra Lane who is attending college with her friends. We are privy to a life-altering event before we fast forward ten years and find ourselves at a train station as Lady Lane awaits a ride to Redmayne Castle for her friend’s engagement. It is here I came to admire this headstrong, fearless young woman as she faced down a beast.

Piers Gedrick Atherton, the Duke of Redmayne known to all as the Terror of Torcliff needs to produce an heir to outwit his traitorous ex-fiance’ and backstabbing cousin and is planning to announce his engagement to Lady Lane’s friend. Only the two do not suit and truth be told he can’t stop thinking about her friend Alexandra.

Secrets, suspense, misunderstanding, murder attempts, almost kisses…. gads! From wicked banter to intellectual bickering it was delightful listening to this tale unfold. It was also painful as the misunderstanding came from Alexandra’s inability to share the dark, terrible secrets from her past. I wanted to hug them both. Byrne spun an addictive, wicked tale with passion, emotion, laughter and love.

If you haven’t yet tried this author, this is the perfect series to begin. Derek Perkins was wonderful as the narrator. His voice for Alexandra was soft and feminine while bringing out the gruff emotions of Piers. See my blog review for trigger warnings. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
