Loyalty In Death by J D Robb

Loyalty In Death (In Death, #9)

by J D Robb

Eve Dallas has been chosen by a deadly revolutionary group, Cassandra, as their one true adversary. While investigating the seemingly simple case of a jealous lover killing her partner, she receives a disk from Cassandra, telling her to expect a demonstration of their power. Arriving just in time to see one of her billionaire husband Roarke's empty properties blown up, the link continues as more of Roarke's city landmarks are destroyed, testing Eve and her team to the limit and costing more and more lives.

Discovering that Cassandra is linked to a previous group, responsible for blowing up the Pentagon several years ago, things turn increasingly sinister as Eve realises that the murdered man and his family are implicated, and she races to break down the web of deceit and destruction before the city falls.

Loyalty in Death started off a bit rough for me, but it certainly picks up by the end! When it starts, Eve has two seemingly unrelated cases. The first being a terrorist group sending bomb threats. The second is a man who was murdered by his girlfriend. Obviously terrorists aren't in Eve's department but they're focused on her, so she has no choice but to play their sick game. As for the second, the girlfriend admitted it, so why can't Eve let it go?

When Loyalty in Death started, I had to wonder why Eve was so focused on this murder. It's not like the girlfriend killed him and ran, she turned herself in. And yet Eve doesn't close the case. Clearly the author had a twist planned, but in the beginning this plot thread felt really forced because there wasn't much to go on. Eve's only line of evidence was that the girlfriend would inherit millions of dollars, but...she still admitted to killing him! There's nothing to solve! But then the twist came later.

I didn't really get into Loyalty in Death until Delia Peabody's brother got involved. He's just kind of there, hanging out, working, and generally not being interesting. And then....oh boy, and then things take off! I couldn't stop reading! What has he gotten himself tangled up in!?

Loyalty in Death had me nervous in the beginning because the two crimes were too disconnected and Eve's obsession with connecting them felt forced. But once those connections are actually made, I was hooked! I never should have doubted!
