This book had TOO much going on — a possible serial killer, science gone wrong (zombies?!), agriculture espionage and bad politicians. I wish the author had focused on ONE thing and not tried to wrap it all together. At times the plot felt heavy handed and in your face. (Oh, there's a rattlesnake in the garden shed? Yep, that sucker's going to make another appearance at JUST the right time. Oh, and why does the MC always have to be dealing with the fallout of a past sexual assault? Are there no other traumas people experience that affect their lives for years afterwards?

All of that aside, that author did a good job representing the state of Iowa, its farmers and everyday citizens. She shows promise as a writer. I just hope that the next novel is honed down a bit and more subtle.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
