Owlflight by Mercedes Lackey

Owlflight (Owl Mage Trilogy, #1) (Darian's Tale)

by Mercedes Lackey

The latest in the internationally bestselling Valdemar sequence of brilliantly imagimned fantasies. Darian is a young boy living as apprentice to the wizard Justyn in Errold Green, a small Valdemaran village. He is unwilling to hone his skill in magic as he believes it is quicker and a damned sight more efficient to achieve your ends by purely physical methods. Darien's parents disappeared on a hunting trip into the forest, the villagers believe they have fallen prey to the monsters created in the Mage storms, that they themselves may have been changed. But Darien believes differently. When Errold Green is suddenly and devastatingly attacked by a force of men accompanied by monstrous creatures of magic, Justyn makes a dramatic last stand , destroying the village in a cataclysmic spell that Darien witnesses. Escaping into the forest, Darien is chased down by 3 of enemy only to be saved at the point of capture by the mysterious Hawk brothers. It is the beginning of a new life, born out of the ashes of the old, where he will for the 1st time realise the worth of the magical talent he has always wanted to rid of.

I am obsessed with the entire Valdemar epic saga— all the standalones, duologies, trilogies, etc. Owlflight is the first of one my favorite trilogies within the series.

This book begins the trilogy of Darian, a Valdemarian orphan whose parents disappeared into the mysterious woods that border his tiny, isolated village. The townspeople, having viewed his family as outliers, were disgruntled at finding him in need of care. And Darian knew it, feeling even more lost and alone. Then barbarians swoop into the village, and he only barely managed to escape… into the clan of the mysterious Hawkbrothers. They shelter him, adopt him as one of their own, and help him save his village.

The world-building that Mercedes Lackey is unparalled. She is extraordinary at creating worlds that are completely fantastical yet entirely believable. From the settings to the creatures, she builds worlds that I want to live in.

Many find the storylines a bit slow, but I think that isn’t a negative but a positive when it comes to Lackey’s novels. She creates characters that are fully realized and flawed, with plots that are character-driven, allowing their arcs to develop over the entire trilogy/series.

My recommendation: If you love really good high fantasy, this is a beautiful book to read.
