The Basics:
This is the first in a Paranormal Romantic Suspense series. Our narrator is Kiera, or Mac as her coworkers call her, a half-banshee detective in Chicago.
My Thoughts:
Banshee Charmer was interesting. It definitely leans more toward the Paranormal Mystery end of the spectrum than Paranormal Romance. In fact, Kiera and Aidan don’t even kiss until 56%! And it felt more like the author just remembered that this was suppose to be a romance and threw them together before getting back to the mystery. There are a couple of sex scenes, but there’s little development of an actual relationship here. Keira and Aidan don’t spend much time together, and certainly not on purpose. He kind of randomly appears when convenient.
I did enjoy the mystery aspect of Banshee Charmer. Several women have turned up dead with no clear cause of death. Obviously, it’s paranormal in nature, but what? All signs point toward an incubus, but they’ve supposedly been extinct for over a hundred years. Kiera has to use all of the tools are her disposal to weed out the killer without getting herself killed. Of course, there has to be a point in the story where her love interest becomes a suspect. That’s to be expected, but it’s not like we got to know him at all anyway. Like I said, his appearances are random, convenient, and possibly suspicious.
Overall, I did like Banshee Charmer. There’s nothing new or special here. I was disappointed in the lackluster romance, but the mystery kept my attention. I also like the world set up here. It’s a version of ours where paranormal creatures are out and monitored. Some are accepted, while others are not. I’m looking forward to reading more.
