I received a copy of Derailed in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Derailed is the exciting new novel by Mary Keliikoa, and the first in a new series (PI Kelly Pruett). Personally, I couldn't be more excited about the idea of getting a new thriller series to follow, so that's why I'm here.

Kelly Pruett, PI, has picked up a lot of the slack in her life. As a single mom, she doesn't just have to take care of her daughter, but her late father's business as well. Plus half a dozen other complications to boot.

It was almost a relief when she found a case to dive into. Though the entire ordeal quickly spiraled out of control, as its new truth reveals layers of hidden motive and complications. This is not the open and shut case most people would wish for.

Warnings: The biggest warning for Derailed (not counting the obvious themes surrounding a murdered woman) would have to be the abusive ex.

Derailed was arguably one of the most intriguing intros into a series that I've read in quite some time. I've been craving a new thriller series, and this book met that hope with enthusiasm. Everything from the way Kelly got pulled into this world, to the new case she was working on captivated me.

Kelly's a strong character, and the perfect leading lady for a series about a competent PI. I think what I love the most about her is that she's juggling so much, and yet she only seems to get stronger (and more determined) as time goes on. And we're only one book in! Imagine what she'll be like towards the end of the third book, for example.

This book is very much a cozy mystery, with some fun thrilling elements thrown into the mix. It was a compelling read, as I tried to fit the pieces of the puzzle together alongside Kelly. Better yet, the conclusion ended up making sense, as well as being thematically appropriate. Perfection!

Oh! Did I mention that there's a dog as well? Yep, this series is basically everything I was looking for in a new thriller/mystery, which is arguably the reason why I'm talking it up so much. But I'm okay with that.

In a world where detective series are plentiful, PI Kelly Pruett worked hard to stand out. Her circumstances are different, though one can argue that much of her determination feels familiar. Still, I personally love the idea of diving into a new series, watching a rookie turn into a pro. Here's looking forward to her next adventure.
