This book was a great view into the BDSM lifestyle and what a healthy Sub/Dom or Master/Slave relationship looks like. I have read plenty of books where these types of relationship are always unhealthy or the woman is being forced into it against her will or, as in one forgettable book, she is an undercover cop infiltrating the big bad BDSM club. And the movies that have been made about the lifestyle, forget it. Always portrayed in a bad light. So it is a great thing when a book like this comes along.

The scenes involving the Slave (Victoria) and her Master (John) were wonderfully written. Very explicit but they had to be to get the full experience of what both people were experiencing. Victoria is a Masochist. What a masochist is a person who gets sexual release from pain and/or humiliation. John is a Sadist. A sadist is someone who enjoys inflicting pain on others, sometimes in a sexual sense and they like seeing people hurt. In John’s case, his is in a sexual sense but other sadists aren’t….if that makes sense. Actually the most famous sexual sadist that I can think of is the Marquis de Sade.

While the sex scenes between Victoria and John were wonderfully written, I still winced at the some of the scenes. Mainly the caning scene and the scene with the bullwhip (where she also had nipple clamps). Pain isn’t my thing and reading about those made silently go “Ouch”. But the brutality of those scenes were made up for the genuine love and respect that Victoria and John had for one another.

How many stars will I give The Gift – A Sadist and His Slave: 4

Why: Like I said above, a wonderfully written book about the BDSM lifestyle. While the sex scenes took me out of my comfort zone, I enjoyed reading them.

Will I reread: Yes

Will I recommend to family and friends: I would but with a warning that it has very explicit sex scenes.

Age Range: Adult

Why: Very explicit sex scenes, language and violence (whipping, caning, spanking by leather strap)
