Disclaimer: I am a Jay Crownover fan. I fell in love with her MCs with the Marked Men series and continue my love in this world with the Saints of Denver. With that said, there is a forward in this book from Jay warning us fans that this is a little different for her. It's grittier and darker than her Marked series. This difference was obvious, and I thought it would be put me off, but as the story played on, I actually grew to care about Bax. Crownover did a fantastic job creating Bax. He was a very complex MC, and I thought Jay built a solid case for why he was the way he was, but also revealed his softer side.
One of the ways these two sides of Bax were illustrated were quite explicitly. Dovie would often switch between "Bax" and "Shane" in addressing his two distinct personas. This book is a lot like Bax: Sexy, Dark, Dangerous. Sexy - the chemistry between Dovie and Bax is off the charts and there is a lot of sexy times between them. Dark - we are taken into the Point, which is an underbelly sort of place. Criminal behavior is the norm and death may be the only way out once you're in. Dangerous - see aforementioned criminal activity, but also dangerous in who you choose to attach yourself with. Attachments could be deadly for you and for those you care about. There were also some plot twists that I did not see coming. I think I audibly gasped when I learned a certain piece of information.
Overall: A thrilling gritty walk on the wrong side of town, and a great start to a new series I am excited about.
