Minion is all about Damali. She's a spoken word artist and a very special vampire huntress. Although, she doesn't know anything about her particular brand of special and we really know nothing about vampire hunters in general. The action starts right away with Damali and the other Guardians heading out to fight evil, and the entire time I was wondering if vampires are known to humans. They just go out and start setting things on fire and shooting, surely this is expected behavior if humans know about the creatures of the night? Well, nope. It comes out later that vampires are still "in the coffin." So what the heck?!
There's also a ton of info-dumps in Minion. This should have made it less confusing, since we get tons of information all at once, but it had the exact opposite effective. It mostly just random facts and stories thrown at us, and it was all in dialogue! I hate that! No one sits around and talks like this, especially when they already know these things and they're just being said out loud for the reader's benefit. It's awkward. Not to mention that once Damali starts asking the right questions (stuff I wanted to know, too) she got the "Well, that we don't know" answer. Come on! It also seemed like there were a lot of contradictory statements. I'm still not sure if Damali's existence is caused by the existence of vampires and humanity needing her, or if she's some gift from God. Religious or paranormal? I don't know.
Minion was just a mess. I don't have a clue what's going on other than Damali is coming into some new powers that no one understands. Something about hormones and pheromones and other kind of moans. Music artists are turning up dead, but it might not be the vampires. It's probably some demon, but no one knows for sure. And somehow a drug dealer fits into all of this. I don't get it.
