Avoiding Alpha by Aileen Erin

Avoiding Alpha (Alpha Girl, #2)

by Aileen Erin

Seventeen-year-old Tessa McCaide has come a long way since her abrupt entrance into the world of werewolves, but she still has just as far to go before she’s comfortable with turning full wolf. In the meantime, she’s avoiding the topic of shifting to four legs any way she can. Thankfully her mate, Dastien Laurent, is quite the distraction.

When she finds her best friend, Meredith, getting sick in the bathroom, Tessa knows something’s majorly wrong. Meredith was cursed years ago, and the dark magic kept her wolf dormant―only now the wolf is awake, and that same spell is killing her.

Tessa has no intention of sitting around while Meredith wastes away. Even if it means playing with magic she doesn’t understand, she’ll do anything to save Meredith’s life. Including bargaining with the local coven of witches and its crazed leader, whose only goal is getting Tessa to join the witchy ranks.

Can Tessa save her friend without losing herself?

Avoiding Alpha was a quick and interesting follow up to Becoming Alpha. Tessa and Dastien are preparing for their upcoming Tribunal, Tessa's birthday, and the full moon. But suddenly Meredith gets super sick. Werewolves don't get sick. Ever. It turns out that her wolf has been agitated and is now fighting against the curse that keeps her from shifting. Tessa can't just sit by while her friend is dying, especially when it was her family who put the curse on her in the first place. Now, it's time to face the head of her coven to reverse the curse, or learn to use her own bruja magic, which might make things worse.

I really enjoyed Avoiding Alpha. At first it seemed like a novella that was just focused on Meredith and breaking her curse. But it really wound up being about Tessa finally embracing her two halves and settling into herself. She's been fighting her transformation for weeks now, but she has to change soon or she'll never get under control. On the other hand, she has all of this magic, but no idea how to use it. She can't go to her coven without losing her wolf, but she also can't learn how to hone her abilities without guidance. Saving Meredith was the perfect way for her to learn what she's capable of, but it also caused some complications with her coven, which I'm excited to see how that all plays out.

Avoiding Alpha was pretty great. I was never bored as Tessa does everything she can to try to save her friend. She learned a lot more about her powers as an alpha wolf, and also started to get a hold of her bruja powers. There's also a bit more romance here. She and Dastien are kind of sickeningly sweet! It was feeling more insta-lovey this time, but I like said in my review for the first book, there are reasons! But the two have a lot more trials to face, and I can't wait!
