Basically, this book was the perfect ending for me. I specify the for me part because I have read reviews that weren't as favorable. Of course, with a love triangle, there will be someone disappointed either way. Beyond that, I noticed that a lot of fellow readers had some trouble with the book in general: World building, plausibility of certain parts, amount of action vs. character interaction, etc.
Fine, all these things are true, I will grant you that. But for me, this trilogy was never really about all that stuff. My view is, some books are meant to be more about the characters. The growth, the changes, the lessons learned, and less about the events surrounding them but more how the characters handled them and came out the other side.
Juliette was a mess when we first met her. She was scared, hopeless, and broken. And we got to watch her emerge, albeit in her own way and in her own time, from those shadows to find the person she was supposed to be all along. To me, that is far more powerful than any societal description or realism could ever provide.
The supporting characters went through these same transformations. We saw them evolve, some for better, some for worse. But isn't that how people in general are? Some of us grow in a positive way, and some of us don't. But we all experience a journey, and I feel that Tahereh Mafi poured emotion into this book in the very best way. I simply could not put it down. I feel that anyone can write an action scene, but it takes a special kind of author to be able to pull at the heartstrings through character development. And Mafi and this book absolutely delivered for me. While I am sad to see this series end, I am happy that it ended in the way it did, and I am happy I was able to take the journey with these characters.
