The Day The Falls Stood Still by Cathy Marie Buchanan

The Day The Falls Stood Still (Voice)

by Cathy Marie Buchanan

Bess Heath has led a life of ease as the daughter of the director of the Niagara Power Company. After graduating from boarding school in 1915‚ she returns to her home near Niagara Falls to find everything changed: her father has lost is job‚ her mother is reduced to taking in sewing‚ and her once vivacious sister is shut away in her room. Then‚ by chance‚ Bess meets Tom Cole and is inexplicably drawn to this rough-hewn man who lives off what the river provides.

A love story in the obvious sense - between a man and a woman - but also a love story between a man and a river. The language is beautiful and the author does a wonderful job of conveying the wonder and magic that a natural treasure like the Niagara River and Falls hold. There is a sadness for what has been lost both in nature and within the plot of the story.

This is a beautiful story and I highly recommend it. I wish half stars were allowed. 4.5 stars in my opinion.
