Daughter of Witches by Patricia C Wrede

Daughter of Witches (Lyra, #2)

by Patricia C Wrede

Six years ago the Temple of Chaldon burned her parents as witches. Now three forbidden guests bribe her abusive bond-holder innkeeper to stay during the Midwinter Festival in Drinn. She attracts the unwanted attention of head priest Gadrath, and so do kindly healer Mist, and mated mercenaries Jaren and Arelnath. Orphan urchin friend Shandy can guide them to secret tunnels, but how can they escape the evil Shadow Chaldon, unless Alethia conquers her fears and accepts her powers?

Fun read with lots of action and engaging characters - this is a great sort of summer, fantasy read. Not quite as much depth of emotion or character as I normally like. But I decided that sometimes an easy, fun read is just the ticket. And [a:Patricia Wrede|36122|Patricia C. Wrede|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1215652809p2/36122.jpg] does that exceptionally. Especially in the fantasy genre where I feel like there aren't a lot of well written, lighter books. Or if there are I haven't found them. And maybe light isn't quite the right description for this book which definitely has its dark spots but they're handled discreetly enough and lend an air of seriousness that works for this story. Even with that, though, it's an easy read and the pacing is great.
