Frostblood by Elly Blake

Frostblood (Frostblood Saga, #1)

by Elly Blake

Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. But when her mother is killed trying to protect her, and rebel Frostbloods demand her help to overthrow their bloodthirsty king, she agrees to come out of hiding, desperate to have her revenge.

Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating--yet irresistible--Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king's tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her--and from the icy young man she has come to love.

What I Loved

I had high expectations for this book only because a lot of fantasies have been letting me down lately. A lot of them are blending together and aren’t as memorable as I want them to be. This book exceeded all my expectations and I loved every minute of it! Think along the lines of Throne of Glass mixed with Snow Like Ashes only not as disappointing or predictable. Sure some parts I totally saw coming but most of the book was a happy surprise. It’s a series where I’ll be waiting desperately for the next book.

My favourite part about this book was how all the of characters were described as imperfect. Normally we get the beautiful heroine who can do no wrong and the gorgeous love interest. That’s not the case here. Our main character Ruby, while described as beautiful, has lots of personality flaws. She has a temper and lacks focus but we continue to see her grow as a character throughout the whole book. She learns to (try to) control her temper and she starts to figure out what she’s fighting for. Our love interest (while perfect in my eyes) is a young man with a horribly disfigured face which I loved about him. While it partially fuels his revenge he also doesn’t let it stop him from doing what he knows is the right thing. I have tons of respect for both characters and I’m looking forward to what happens in the next books.

What I Didn't Love

The plot could be a little bit predictable at times though I didn't expect what happened near the end. It also felt like there was some insta-love because it did happen in just a few pages but it was actually months that were going by, it just didn't feel like it. I think I'm ok with that though. It was by no means a perfect book, it was just that the entertainment outweighed a lot of the flaws in this case.

Who I'd Recommend To

I’d recommend this to lovers of young adult fantasy that are looking for something new and refreshing. I personally am getting a little tired of seeing the same characters and plot everywhere so this was a really great book for me to finish. I have hope now for some of the debut authors of 2017. Don't let me down!
