Hunter

Long ago, the barriers between our world and the Otherworld were ripped open, and it's taken centuries to bring back civilization in the wake of the catastrophe. Now, the luckiest Cits live in enclosed communities, behind walls that keep them safe from the hideous creatures fighting to break through. Others are not so lucky.

An unfortunate rehash of every generic dystopian YA novel that has gone before, Mercedes Lackey's 'Hunter' was another book I unfortunately didn't get more than 25% of the way through. The protagonist so far is a generic teenaged special dystopian flower with no personality but some cool magic dogs, and rather than world building Lackey instead chose to inundate the reader with a ton of info just to show how same, same but different this world is to ours. To top this off, Lackey indulges in my pet sci-fi peeve. Real world words are used, but changed slightly to give it a 'quirky', futuristic feel. Videos are now vids, hot chocolate is now Chocolike, city dwellers are now Cits (although somehow a train is still a train and a pig is still a pig?) and the second Lackey called Vegetarians Vaygans I put the book down. I'd had enough. Everything about this book was lazy, and quite frankly, I have better things to do with my time.
