Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha, #1)

by Tomi Adeyemi

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie's Reaper mother summoned forth souls. But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

The world building in this book is great and the story/use of magic is interesting but overall everything seemed so simple. Character building was lacking, by the end of the book I still didn’t really care about what happened to any of the characters, I didn’t care about their relationships or anything. Problems and obstacles were presented and then quickly overcome to the point where I just got bored. Everything was expected and not detailed/complex enough to hold my interest. I’ll still read the next book at some point because the last 15% of this one was actually really good
