Shattered Empire picks up right as Return of the Jedi ends. The second Death Star has been destroyed and the Emperor is dead, but the Rebels are not done fighting…not even close. The Empire is still struggling to maintain order and is going to drastic steps to ensure it keeps moving forward.
SE follows Shara Dameron (yes movie watchers, that last name IS familiar) as she continues to help the rebels, despite the distance it places between her and her family. While this story doesn’t lean itself as overly necessary to the plot of Force Awakens it is like one nice little nod to several of the other books and characters…and serves to raise a lot of questions about the time between Return and Awakens. A few characters that we know are mentioned, hinted at, or play a bigger part….but damn did I want this to have more answers than it did. Depsite that it’s still a highly enjoyable comic series. The art is fantastic, the plot is solid, and there are plenty of really amazing scenes that I would love to see recreated in live action.
I really hope there are more books to cover the space between Return and Awakens that brings in some of the more mysterious elements of this plot like what Luke is up to and just what that brief flash of a certain character actually means.
