In Her Dreams (Novella)

by Katherine Givens

A flirty, fun, mix–and–match romance about two sisters who are betrothed to the wrong men...

Evangeline Vernon is a woman on the verge of spinsterhood – until the prim and proper Duke of Manchester steps in. Her family is pleased with the match, but the duke is not the passionate man Evangeline craves. Her heart belongs to an alluring, golden–haired gentleman, perfect in every way...except one: he doesn't exist.

Angela Vernon is everything a proper, well–brought–up woman should be. She knows her place and understands society's expectations – which include not being jealous of her sister and not coveting her sister's suitor. But how can she bear the heartache of watching the only man she loves marry not only her sister, but a woman who doesn't see past his exterior to the man he is beneath?

I won access to an eCopy of this novel courtesy of ArmchairBEA 2014. This review in its entirety was originally posted at caffeinatedlife.net: http://www.caffeinatedlife.net/blog/2014/06/24/review-in-her-dreams/

The story was pretty straightforward: Evangeline does not wish to marry the Duke of Manchester, wishing instead to fall in love and marry the man who appears quite frequently in her dreams. Meanwhile her sister Angela is in love with the duke but cannot say anything about it, following instead the proper protocols and expectations that her mother and society dictates.

I think the story would have benefited if it had been longer: the resolution of the story happened much too quickly and some aspects of the story could’ve been fleshed out further, such as Angela’s love for the duke and how long and how deep that interest in him has been, as well as proper explanation behind their mother’s motivations. There was also one element of this story that I did not expect (and was taken quite literally), which that sort of took me out of the experience of the novella.

In Her Dreams was interesting enough, kept me invested to see how everything was going to turn out for Evangeline and Angela. The dialogue was a little clunky at the start, but it evened out over the course of the story.
