The topic of complete abstinence from alcohol is a difficult one. Author and Southern Baptist minister Peter Lumpkins provides an argument with all the backing details of the bad things that come mainly from teenagers that over indulge talking about how with the church stating that alcohol is okay in moderation, it's a gateway. I fully understand the argument of wanting teenagers to stay away from alcohol entirely, but I feel that because teenagers break the rules is not a full proof reason to call any amount of alcohol a sin. I also have trouble with the idea of complete abstinence from the substance as it is so often used and reference in the Bible in worship situations. Personally, I hardly ever drink. If I really thought about it I could probably name every time I have ever had a drink. But with communion and then a drink of wine here or there, I do not think that I'm paving a road to disaster and in the future I do not think that my example will lead my daughter as a teenager to think it's okay in moderation. There is never an excuse for a teenager to drink, and if the rules that are made for a purpose are followed and the chemical reactions of a substance acknowledged I see no reason for complete abstinence. I feel that with this form of logic, one would be shut up in their home with no contact for the world, for there are many battles to choose and this is not one I'm behind. Limitations are acknowledged and exist for a purpose, but screaming null to all is energy best sent elsewhere.
