The story revolves around the lives of Daniel and Natasha, the time frame is one day. I have no idea how they were able to do so much in a day. Like really, it was almost unbelievable, they eat at two restaurants, rode the subway (multiple times), walked a bunch of city blocks, went back home twice (about 20 minute ride both ways), had an interview, lawyer appointment, trip to the museum, etc. Like really they did a lot. The story also has insta-love but it's done different, it also revolves around fate or destiny. I believe in love at first sight, I did with my husband (seriously it was) but this just seemed so over the top. I just couldn't get behind what was going on. The real kicker is the twist and I hated it...yup, I hated the last handful of chapters at the end of this book. Now, it's not because it didn't go how I wanted but with all that build up, I just didn't get the end, I really didn't and the last page, I almost physically threw the book.
The positive is the character build is fantastic, you really felt for both Daniel and Natasha, I actually liked reading in Daniels POV. He was just a really funny guy and I just loved the voice she gave him. I liked Natasha, just not as much as I would have liked, I am not sure why. I felt so bad for her but I think her hot and cold attitude is what threw me off. I had more of an issue with the relationship between the two characters more than anything. I found the entire thing sort of forced and very strange. Like it takes more than a day to really get to know someone. At some points Daniel even mentioned that and I kept thinking but then this doesn't really doesn't make sense. If you know you don't know her, how can you be so in love with her, like the way he was? (You need to read the book to see what I mean, I can't give anything away even though I am DYING to)
With the state of the world I wont even express my opinion on the deportation or racism in the book because I don't want it taken wrong. Everyone has different beliefs, I felt bad for both families and I will leave it at that. This book really is perfect for what is going on in the world now.
Overall, this wasn't a bad read. I did enjoy, to a point, the characters. The story was interesting but extremely frustrating. This is a book that I believe will be hit or miss. I never read any of Nicola Yoon's other books (I think she has one) I don't think this will be my last book from her. I would love to read more from her. I do recommend, if you aren't sure if you should read it I think you should give it a try and then send me a message so we can chat about it. :)
