Before Amen

by Max Lucado

We all pray.We pray to stay sober, centered, or solvent. When the lump is deemed malignant. When the money runs out before the month does. When the marriage is falling apart. We pray. But wouldn't we like to pray more Better Stronger With more fire, faith, and fervencyYet we have kids to feed, bills to pay, deadlines to meet. The calendar pounces on our good intentions like a tiger on a rabbit. And what about our checkered history with prayer Uncertain words. Unmet expectations. Unanswered requests. We aren't the first to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance too. In fact, prayer is the only tutorial they ever requested. And Jesus gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer. Couldn't we use the sameIn Before Amen best-selling author Max Lucado joins readers on a journey to the very heart of biblical prayer, offering hope for doubts and confidence even for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized prayer, Max reminds readers that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen few. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. Let the conversation begin.

These last few weeks at my church in the Thursday morning Women's Bible Study, we've been reading together through 'Before Amen' by Max Lucado. Let me tell you, I adore Max's writing, it always touches my heart and soul. Last year I endured through Ann Voskamp's 'One Thousand Gifts' and this year it was 'Before Amen'. Boy... Max and Ann really know how to grab your heart strings!

While I purchased the 'Before Amen' book from the church to go with the study, I was blessed to get my hands on the 'Before Amen Prayer Journal' from the publisher as well as a gift of some key fobs. What a wonderful gift! I gave out the key fobs to everyone in our class and it was a perfect number, God planned 'eh?

Max has come up with a miniature prayer to get the prayer rolling and the message is on the key fob so that it's always available to you if you need the inspiration. In much the same way the Prayer journal is written also with just enough prompting with lines in between to let your prayers flow on to the page.

Max Lucado has an incredible ministry of sharing in his books and while I'm not as in love with this one as say The Story or You'll Get Through This, Before Amen is a good book to read. So many times we cancel ourselves out of prayer, but why? In this little book (about nine chapter, I think off the top of my head...) you can travel through purposes, reasons, and ways to prayer.

What all do you have before your amen? Eucharisto, abba father.
