The Bookworm Crush

by Lisa Brown Roberts

Amy McIntyre’s artistic dreams were crushed by a scathing art critic, but she’s determined to reboot her confidence this summer. She’s made a list of her flaws that need fixing, though she’s not quite sure how to tackle them. One thing she is sure of- she doesn’t need Toff Nichols declaring himself her wingman and taking over her list like a boss. Especially since he’s the reason for a secret to-do item on her list: BKoML (Best Kiss of My Life).

Toff Nichols plans to spend his summer surfing and partying, but when an injury sidelines him, he’s desperate to find something- or someone- to distract him until he can get back in the water. Enter Amy McIntyre, artist and book nerd. She needs him for her stupid list, even though she won’t admit it, because what kind of girl goes around listing her “flaws” when she’s flawless?

I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Amy is the sidekick to her own story until a chance of a lifetime puts her in the spotlight in this fun, quick contemporary romance.

Amy reminded me of me when I was a teenager (which was, admittedly, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away). I always felt like the sidekick to my friends, and, similarly to Amy, I was okay with playing the role. I’d like to think a chance of a lifetime (say me meeting Nora Roberts as a teen) would have pushed me into coming out of my shell, but I doubt it. Amy is a great role model, showing fear and doubting yourself should never define you or your dreams.

Toff is a fun, flirty juxtaposition to the more serious, conservative Amy. Their banter (and subsequent romance) is entertaining, but not that memorable. I didn’t realize when I request this book it was a spin-off of The Replacement Crush. I never read the first one so I do not know if this book holds up or is lacking from the original. The couple from the first book do make several appearances in this one so people pining for the original couple should be happy.

tl;dr A fun and quick romance focused on characters learning to embrace their dreams personally and publicly.
