FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER THE CALLERĀ
Inside a Los Angeles church, on the altar steps, lies the blood-soaked body of a priest. Later, the forensic team discover that, on the victim's chest, the figure 3 has been scrawled in blood.
At first, Detective Robert Hunter believes that this is a ritualistic killing. But as more bodies surface, he is forced to reassess. All the victims died in the way they feared the most. Their worst nightmares have literally come true. But how could the killer have known? And what links these apparently random victims?
Hunter finds himself on the trail of an elusive and sadistic killer, someone who apparently has the power to read his victims' minds. Someone who can sense what scares his victims the most. Someone who will stop at nothing to achieve his twisted aim.
I had really high expectations towards this book, because the first one was incredibly good. Really, it was! However, it didn't take more than a few pages for me to realize that this book wouldn't meet those expectations. I had to read quite a lot of pages before this book picked up pace, and that was a big disappointment to me. I also had a hard time keeping track of all the cases, which only added to my confusion.
This book isn't nearly as creepy as the first one was. Instead, this one is gross. Really. It made me sick every now and then. It worked okay, but it didn't have the same kind of cliffhanger-feeling.
Compared to the first book, it's clear to me that he's a more experienced writer now. The writing was much better and really easy in this book. Unfortunately, I didn't like this story as much as the first one. He's gotten better at some things and lacked on something else.
